Accomodation

There are a variety of hotels in Bhutan, ranging from simple huts to fancy hotels. All the hotels in Thimphu, Paro and Phuntsholing have electricity, telephone, private bathrooms and hot water supply. Every hotel has a restaurant that serves buffet meals. No matter how simple the accommodation is, the room is likely to be elegantly decorated in Bhutanese style. Lavish use of wood for floors and paneling is the norm. Bedspreads and curtains are often made of colorful handloom material, the bedside table is of brightly painted carved wood and the wall paintings can range from mediocre to exquisite.

Some hotels have traditional hot stone bath which is said to have health benefits in addition to its cleansing properties. The bathtub is either a wooden structure or simply a hole dug into the ground. A fire is built nearby to heat large stones, which are eventually rolled down a metal chute into the tub. A wooden grill inside the tub separates you from the red hot rocks as they splash and sizzle into the water.
